When our Animal Welfare & Response Team responded to a call to assist law enforcement with 22 small dogs in northwest Iowa, they could smell the home before they ever reached the door.
As our team approached, the dogs were turned loose and nearly all of them rushed outside. Even as they scattered, our team could see their fur was twisted into painful mats. Feces and dirt clung to their coats and paws, and some had significant hair loss. One by one, our team gently rounded them up and moved them to the safety of our rescue vehicles. Inside the home, the situation was as bad as we’d feared. Feces covered the floor as our team removed every last one of the remaining dogs.
Back at our rescue center, our Emergency Care Team immediately began evaluating and treating the dogs. On top of serious matting, all were suffering from severe flea infestations, causing relentless itching and inflamed skin. Some had large patches of missing fur, and others had eyes that were cloudy or hidden behind mats. One puppy arrived lethargic and dehydrated, needing immediate supportive care.
As their recovery begins, these dogs need you to help them heal and give them hope.
