Sophie was stabbed and almost drowned

Posted on Nov. 17, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

UPDATE (11/17/20, 9:00 a.m)

Rosemary Buelow of Des Moines was found guilty of animal torture related to the cat Sophie. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2021, at 9 a.m. at the Polk County Historic Courthouse.

The next hearing for Ryan Johnson is currently scheduled for Dec. 3, 2020.

UPDATE (05/29/20, 9:39 a.m)

An additional person, Ryan Johnson, 38, was arrested and charged with Animal Torture yesterday afternoon in connection with the cat stabbing case. Ryan Johnson is no longer in the Polk County jail, but Rosemary Buelow remains in custody as of this morning. The Animal Rescue League would like to extend a huge thank you to the Des Moines Police Department for taking this case seriously and pursuing the investigation, which ultimately led to an additional arrest and charge.

Sophie is continuing to receive treatment in the ARL’s Miracle Medical Ward under the supervision of our veterinary team.

ORIGINAL POST (05/29/20, 9:39 a.m)

The Animal Rescue League is always there for animals in need — every day, every hour — including this weekend at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning when we were called to assist Des Moines Police. We arrived to find something truly horrifying: A cat huddled in the bathroom, bleeding from multiple stab wounds, soaking wet, and terrified.

The woman allegedly responsible for the injuries is accused of repeatedly stabbing the cat, then trying to drown her when stabbing didn’t work.

Sophie with stab wound

We rushed the injured cat, and 2 others in the apartment, to the ARL, where our on-call veterinarian was waiting and ready to provide emergency care. The injured cat, whose name is Sophie, was suffering from 3 large stab wounds to her back. Her flesh was raw and bleeding, and the weapon had narrowly missed her spine. Sophie’s neck had also been sliced and she was suffering from a fifth stab wound near her shoulder.

Donate Now

We immediately started her on pain medications and antibiotics and gently cleaned her wounds to prepare her for what was next: The wounds on her back were so severe that they required a long line of staples to close. The wound near her shoulder is still very swollen and we don’t know yet if it will require surgery. We’re also watching her closely for signs of pneumonia from water inhalation. Despite all she has been through, Sophie is an incredibly sweet cat and a model patient.

Victims like Sophie are the reason our emergency responders — and our Miracle Medical Fund — are so critical. Had it not been for our team’s quick response and the emergency veterinary care we were able to provide in the middle of the night, Sophie may not have survived and she still has a long road ahead.

We don’t yet know what surgeries or procedures she will need during her recovery, but we know that with your help, Sophie will never again experience the terror she went through this weekend.

Your donation to our Miracle Medical Fund allows us to respond to the call for help for pets like Sophie at all hours, day or night. Your one-time donation today will help Sophie right now and your monthly donation will help Sophie and other animals who need life-saving help next.

With your help we can continue to provide critical care for pets who are hurt and in pain with nowhere else to turn.

P.S.: Rosemary Kay Buelow, 21, is currently in the Polk County Jail and charged with animal torture (photo below).

What the Federal PACT Act Means and Doesn’t Mean for Iowa’s Animals

Posted on Nov. 10, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

On Nov. 25, 2019, President Trump signed into law a bill making some cases of animal cruelty a federal felony.

The Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act is an amendment to a federal law specifically related to fetish “crush videos.” The original law made the production, possession, and sale of such videos a federal felony, but it did not criminalize the underlying act of cruelty itself. The PACT Act fills that gap by making the act of cruelty a federal felony.

However, the PACT Act only applies in very narrow circumstances related to crush videos, and then only in jurisdictions where no state or local laws apply. You can read more about the PACT Act at Govtrack.us

While this law is significant, the PACT Act does not apply to the vast majority of animal cruelty cases in Iowa and across the nation.

Iowa currently ranks 48th in the country for the effectiveness of its animal protection laws, but a bill (HF737) that was signed into law in 2020 makes several key improvements to Iowa’s companion animal cruelty laws, including increased penalties, improved definitions related to standards of care, and mental health evaluations and restrictions on future possession of animals in certain cases.

On June 29, 2020 Governor Reynolds signed HF737 into law, marking a huge victory for Iowa’s companion animals. The law went into effect July 1, 2020. To read more about what the law will do to protect animals, click here.

Animal Cruelty Bill HF737: Signed into law!

Posted on Oct. 28, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

Today Governor Reynolds signed HF737 into law, marking a huge victory for Iowa’s companion animals.

Governor Reynolds signing HF737

A culmination of years of work, the new law makes many meaningful and long-overdue improvements to Iowa’s companion animal cruelty laws, recognizing the need to hold everyone to a higher standard of care, whether you’re a shelter/rescue, dealer, breeder or simply a pet owner.

Many thanks to everyone who emailed their lawmakers time and time again asking them to support HF737 and thank you to the lawmakers who supported this effort.

Today we’re celebrating this win for the animals!

Effective July 1, 2020, here’s what the new law does:

1. Clarifies Legal Definitions of Animal Cruelty Crimes. In Iowa, there are three levels of animal mistreatment charges: neglect, abuse, and torture. Each of these three levels had poor language and flimsy penalties that failed to properly address animal crimes.

  • Neglect. Under the old law, Iowa pet owners could only be charged if they failed to provide a sufficient quantity of food or water (the quality of food or water was not a factor). HF737 imposed more comprehensive minimum standards of care, including proper quality of food/water, veterinary care, sanitary living conditions, protection from the elements, and basic grooming to avoid undue pain and suffering.
  • Abuse. Under the old law, in order to charge “abuse” the defendant had to inflict injury on an animal owned by another person, i.e. the “owner exception.” HF737 removed that language so that owners could be charged for abusing their own animals.
  • Torture. Under the old law, the prosecutor had to prove the defendant acted with a “depraved or sadistic intent.” This baffling language presented a major impediment to torture prosecutions. HF737 removed that intent language.

2. Implements Mental Health Evaluations. Research demonstrates a clear link between animal cruelty and domestic violence. Timely mental health evaluations can curb future escalations of violence. For this reason, HF737 requires convicted animal abusers to undergo mental health evaluations and treatments wherever there is serious injury or death to an animal, or if the defendant is a minor.

3. Increases Penalties. HF737 increases penalties for most animal cruelty cases. Under the old law, animal cruelty typically resulted in minimal penalties. By raising penalties, Iowa law now recognizes animal cruelty crimes as truly serious. However, we do note that Iowa remains the only state in the country without a first-offense felony for animal torture. This will need to change.

Of course, there is plenty more work that needs to be done in order to better protect Iowa’s companion animals. With your help, we can continue to make animal welfare a priority for our lawmakers.

She Arrived with a Broken Leg and Pelvis

Posted on Jul. 24, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

Donate to Help

How does a young cat like this end up with a severely broken leg and pelvis?

We may never know how this poor kitty got these horrific injuries. But we do know she needs surgery right away to save her life.

Donate Now

Thankfully this very sweet cat, who we named Gracie, was brought to the Animal Rescue League. A tiny cat at just 6 pounds, she was very quiet and in severe pain when she arrived, with abrasions on her stomach and an obviously broken leg. She weakly tried to stand but her injuries were too severe.

Donate to Help Gracie

She was given pain medications immediately, and X-rays taken by our Emergency Care Team revealed even more serious injuries — she is not only suffering from a broken leg, but a broken pelvis, too.

Gracie deserves a second chance, and she needs your help now.

Donate Now

Donate to Help Gracie

Our Miracle Medical Fund exists for cats just like Gracie — ones who have suffered trauma, ones who arrive at the ARL in desperate need of help, ones who have nowhere else to turn. Your donation today will give this precious kitty the miracle she needs right now, and your monthly gift will help her and countless others who will arrive injured and in pain in the weeks to come.

So many animals like Gracie come to us with uncertain pasts, but with your support we can ensure they have the second chances … and happy futures … that they deserve. Please give now to help them heal. To give them hope. To be their miracle.

P.S., When you donate today to help Gracie or enroll in our Loyal Friends Club, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive exclusive updates on her progress.

2 Dogs, Arrive Starving and Dehydrated

Posted on Jul. 17, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

UPDATE (07/16/2020)

On July 14 Lorna Danley was again arrested and was charged with another count of animal neglect. This time ARL officials were called to the property to rescue a cat who had been abandoned in her former home, left in the hot and empty apartment for nearly a week without food or water. There were more animals in Danley’s new home that were also removed, bringing the total pets removed from her care to 10: 2 dogs, 3 cats, 3 kittens, and 2 ferrets.

While we anxiously await resolution in the courts for both cases (hopefully including the prevention of future pet ownership), there is some happy news to share as well. Duke and Mariah have been gaining weight and are now both in loving homes!

In a twist of fate, we learned that Duke had actually been STOLEN from his home last summer and his family had been looking for him all this time. We were able to reunite Duke (whose name is actually Stan) with his very relieved family who have been working closely with their veterinarian to continue his recovery.

Mariah has also found a wonderful family to love. Her new family had been looking for a dog at the ARL for many weeks, taking their time to find the perfect match. As soon as they met Mariah, they knew she was the one.

Mariah and Duke (now Stanley)

UPDATE (06/18/2020)

Lorna Danley of Des Moines, was arrested this morning and charged with 2 counts of animal neglected and cited for multiple other animal ordinance violations related to the Duke and Mariah case below. Danley is currently in the Polk County Jail (mugshot and charges attached). Duke and Mariah continue to improve each day and are expected to make full recoveries.

ORIGINAL POST (06/12/2020)

It just keeps happening.

In just the past few weeks, so many pets have arrived at the Animal Rescue League in need of lifesaving care. Gut-wrenching cruelty cases – stabbings, burnings … and now starvation.

Duke and Mariah arrived at the ARL in the nick of time, rescued from their Des Moines home. They are literally skin and bones – Duke weighs only 37.5 pounds, about half of what his normal body weight should be. Our veterinarian said if they’d not been rescued, he would have been dead within a week. Mariah wouldn’t have had much longer.

Our Emergency Care Team was ready when the dogs arrived, and within minutes the sweet pups were receiving subcutaneous fluids for dehydration and eating the first food they’d had in who knows how long. They’re now on a careful refeeding program to help them regain their weight safely and are being closely watched by our medical team.

Duke

The most amazing part? Even after all they’ve been through, they are incredibly sweet and gentle dogs, eager to please and eager for love. Even in their frail state, they could not stop wagging their tails. They knew they were finally safe.

Duke and Mariah didn’t get this way overnight. Their nightmare of pain and suffering had been going on for weeks, if not months. And their journey to recovery is expected to be long. We’re taking things one day at a time right now.

Duke

The investigation in their case is ongoing, but they need your help now.

Your one-time donation to our Miracle Medical Fund today will help Duke and Mariah and others in need of lifesaving care right now, and your monthly donation will help them and countless others who will arrive at our doors in need of a miracle.

Sadly, the need is high … and it is growing. Your donation is needed now more than ever.

Kittens found with severe burns

Posted on May. 29, 2020Oct. 3, 2025
WARNING: ARTICLE CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGE

UPDATE (05/29/2020, 9:50 a.m.)

In partnership with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person(s) involved with the kittens that were burnt.  Anyone with information in this case should contact Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa at 515-223-1400 or submit the tips online at www.polkcountycrimestoppers.org.

The ARL would like to extend a huge thank you to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for utilizing this reward in their investigation. We hope it will help lead to a quick resolution in this case.

Hans and Greta underwent surgery yesterday and are recovering in the ARL’s Miracle Medical Ward under the close supervision of our veterinary team.

ORIGINAL POST (05/28/2020, 10:36 a.m.)

It’s been a truly horrific week of animal abuse in Des Moines: 2 dogs were starved to death by their owner, a cat survived a stabbing and drowning attempt by a woman who lived in the home, and now this: a box of 9 kittens set on fire with two suffering severe injuries and the others escaping with singed fur and ash.

We can’t even imagine the terror and pain they experienced. Our hearts ache just looking at them.

They need your help now.

Donate

Thankfully, Polk County Animal Control Officers were able to rescue the scared and injured 4-6-week-old kittens over multiple days. They brought the unharmed kittens to the ARL and the injured kittens to an after-hours emergency vet clinic. The two 4-week-olds with severe injuries arrived at the ARL’s Miracle Medical Ward yesterday and are receiving pain medications, antibiotics, burn cream, and eye medication to manage their pain and treat their burns.

The two kittens, who we named Greta and Hans, are receiving critical surgery today to remove the dead tissue from their burns, make them more comfortable, and help their wounds heal. They are suffering from burns over much of their bodies, including all four paws and their ears, noses and lips. Greta is suffering from the most severe and extensive burns. She is lucky to have made it out when she did.

Greta and Hans will remain under the care of our three staff veterinarians, and their healing is expected to take months. We don’t know yet if they will need additional surgeries or procedures as they recover, but we do know that with your support, they will never again experience the horror they endured.

Your one-time donation to our Miracle Medical Fund today will help these fragile kittens and others in need of critical care right now, and your monthly donation will help them and countless others who will arrive at our doors needing lifesaving care.

Sadly, the need is high. We’ve been seeing more and more pets arrive at the ARL with severe injuries and nowhere else to turn. Your donation is needed now more than ever.

Please give now to heal injured pets. To give them hope. To make miracles happen.

Des Moines Man Allegedly Starves 2 Dogs to Death

Posted on May. 20, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

In March, David Goodburn adopted 2 Bonded Buddy dogs from the ARL, promising to give them a great life. Nori (3 years old) and Brie (1.5 years old) were incredibly sweet girls who loved belly rubs, toys, and especially people. Goodburn completed the adoption counseling process, signed the adoption contract committing to the high standards of care we expect from all of our adopters, and paid an adoption fee. At no point were there any indicators during the adoption process that Nori and Brie would not be safe.

This week ARL Animal Services Officers were called to the home of David Goodburn where, to their horror, they discovered the unimaginable: Nori and Brie were deceased inside his Des Moines apartment. Goodburn is accused of abandoning the dogs and leaving them trapped in the apartment to fend for themselves, which ultimately led to their deaths. He has been charged with 2 counts of animal neglect, a serious misdemeanor demonstrating “willful intent”. The investigation is ongoing and is now with the DMPD. Goodburn remains in Polk County jail as of present.

Mugshot of David Goodburn

We are shocked, heartbroken, and furious. Goodburn not only lied to and misled our team, he did the same to the multiple people who were with him and the dogs inside the home after they were adopted. No one saw any red flags until the call came this week…and by then it was too late.

We have adopted 2,614 pets since the beginning of the year, but these pets are so much more than just a number to us: they’re part of our extended ARL family. We love them deeply, care for them diligently, and take great care in ensuring they go to great homes. We will continue to work with law enforcement to hold Goodburn accountable and will be pursuing civil action for his violation of our adoption contract.

No animal should have to suffer the ways these 2 dogs suffered and the charges allowed by current state law are incredibly inadequate for the crime. Prior to the session recessing in March due to COVID-19, the state Senate had passed a bill to improve the definitions and penalties for animal crimes and it now waits in the House for when the session resumes in early June. We urge you to ask your state representative to support the current version of HF737 so it can go to the governor’s desk. Making your voice heard is fast, it’s easy, and it could have lasting impact on animals in Iowa for years to come. Visit VoterVoice to send a message.

Every single day we receive photos and stories from ARL adopters and they always mean so much to us, but today, we really need something to smile about. We would love to see photos and updates of the ARL pets in your homes, so please share on our Facebook page or upload through our submission form.

In loving memory of Nori and Brie.

She was lucky to make it out alive

Posted on Jan. 31, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

Dawn was severely burned and crying in pain

Dawn was alone in the cold, severely burned and crying in pain when a Des Moines Police Officer heard her and rushed her to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

She was still crying loudly when our Emergency Care Team met her and was covered in soot. It was clear that she needed critical care. Her paws, legs and face were burned and raw. She was congested and her breathing was labored. She could barely open one eye and could not open the other. The tips of her ears and all of her whiskers were burned off. All of her fur was singed.

Donate

Whatever happened to her, she was lucky to make it out alive.

Dawn was severely burned and in pain

We started her on pain medication and antibiotics and gave her subcutaneous fluids for severe dehydration. When we offered food, she ate like she hadn’t eaten in days. We carefully cleaned her wounds and treated her burns, wrapped her injured legs and made her as comfortable as possible in a bed of blankets.

Dawn needs your help now.

Donate

We are committed to doing everything we can for this little girl, but we can’t do it alone.

Your gift to our Miracle Medical Fund will give Dawn, and other pets who come to us injured and suffering, the critical care they need and deserve.

Dawn remains under the close watch of our medical team, and while we’re seeing some hopeful signs — she has started purring and gently asking to be petted — she still has a long road ahead of her.

Please give today to ensure that Dawn and others will receive the chance they deserve when they have nowhere else to turn.

P.S. If you have any information related to Dawn and her injuries, please email arl@arl-iowa.org

26 Cats Rescued from One-bedroom Apartment in Des Moines

Posted on Apr. 26, 2019Oct. 3, 2025

26 cats and kittens who had been living crammed in a one-bedroom apartment in Des Moines are now safe at the ARL. All of the cats are reeking of urine and some are in dire need of medical care. When ARL Animal Control officers arrived at the apartment, we found cats and kittens everywhere.

Worse yet, the owner had thrown some of the cats out a window before we arrived.

26 Cats Rescued in Des Moines, ARL

Luckily we got there just in time to save the six cats, including some young kittens and fully declawed cats that were thrown outside. The cats, mostly kittens, were captured one-by-one and immediately brought to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa where the ARL’s Emergency Care Team sprang into action.

More than half of the cats rescued are kittens under 5 months old, including two litters of week-old kittens that are still with their mothers. Many are suffering from horrible upper respiratory infections, flea infestations, eye infections and severe ear mites.

26 cats

One poor cat’s eye had been left untreated for so long it had ruptured. He is still fighting a painful infection in that eye and will need to have it surgically removed once he is well enough.

Some of the cats’ teeth are in such poor condition, they will need major dental surgeries.

They did not deserve this. No animal deserves this. Give today to give them hope.

Your donation to the ARL’s Miracle Medical Fund will save these cats from the pain and suffering they have endured and prepare them for the homes they have always deserved.

When you make a donation today you’ll also provide spay/neuter surgeries for all 26 cats to help end the cycle of overpopulation.

Bella: Starving, Dehydrated, Neglected and Abandoned

Posted on Apr. 4, 2019Oct. 3, 2025

UPDATE 04/04/19: 1 year-old Bella arrived at the ARL at the end of February emaciated, hunched over, shivering uncontrollably, and covered in urine and feces. She had been neglected and abandoned and was so weak from starvation and dehydration that she could barely stand. She was suffering from hypothermia and her body was beginning to shut down. Thanks to the quick action and skill of the ARL’s Veterinary team, Bella survived and his now with a family who loves her.

Bella’s owner, Patricia Hernandez just pleaded guilty to the charge of Animal Neglect – Care & Treatment and was ordered to pay a fine of just $65.

Bella AdoptedUPDATE 03/19/19: We’re happy to announce that Bella just walked out the door on her way to her new home! Her new mom had to say goodbye to her previous dog a while back and had been watching Bella’s story online. She fell in love with Bella as soon as she met her and has already started spoiling her with toys and treats from our Animal House store!

Bella has come so far from the little dog who arrived here emaciated and in need of emergency care. We could not be more thrilled to see her happy, healthy … and now home with her new family. Congratulations to Bella and her new mama!

UPDATE 03/18/19: Remember Bella, the abandoned dog who came to us emaciated and suffering from hypothermia? We’re happy to report that she is now healthy and ready for adoption! After everything she has been through, she does have some special needs. Interested in giving Bella a home? Here’s what she’s looking for:

  1. Someone to play and cuddle with her! Now that she feels better, Bella is a silly, bouncy girl who loves toys, scratches and pets.
  2. A calm, quiet home. Too much activity can be too much for her, but she thrives in a peaceful environment.
  3. A family who is willing to go very slowly with her if there are men in the household. She can be uncomfortable around some new people, particularly males, and may need extra time to get used to them.
  4. A home with no other dogs. Bella prefers not to share her space with other dogs, so she needs to be the only dog in her home.
  5. A home where it’s OK if she is vocal sometimes. Bella is an excellent doorbell and will let you know anytime she hears or sees anything. Because of this, apartment life might not be ideal for her.
  6. A family who will make her part of their daily lives. Bella bonds closely with her people, so she’s looking for a family who will love that!

We’re so excited for Bella to find the loving family she’s always deserved. If you can give Bella a home, please email Cassandra at petbehavior@arl-iowa.org!

It never gets easier. No matter how many times we see unimaginable suffering, the horror is still the same. That’s how it was when Bella arrived at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa just a few days ago.

BellaThe little dog was emaciated – hunched over, shivering uncontrollably, and covered in urine and feces. She had been neglected and abandoned and was so weak from starvation and dehydration that she could barely stand.

Even scarier, Bella was suffering from hypothermia. Her body was beginning to shut down. Bella isn’t out of the woods yet. She desperately needs your help.

Donate Now

Bella had arrived at the ARL just in time. Much longer and she would not have survived.

Our Emergency Care Team immediately started Bella on IV fluids and began actively warming her with heat packs and blankets. We held her as she shook and carefully cleaned her with dry shampoo, since her temperature was too low to risk using water. We gently treated her legs and feet, which were raw and inflamed from living in her own waste.

Bella

Your donation to our Miracle Medical Fund provides hope for Bella and other pets like her who come to the ARL in desperate need of help.

Bella is still facing a long road to recovery, but we’re happy to report that in the past few days in our care, she has gained a pound and we were finally able to give her a real bath.

Bella

With your help, Bella will never again know the horrors she suffered at the hands of her abuser, and once she has healed, she’ll have the chance to find the loving home she so deserves.
