Nearly 30 cats rescued from van in extreme heat

Posted on Aug. 29, 2024Dec. 29, 2025

When our Animal Welfare and Response Team arrived in Mason City to assist police with dozens of cats trapped in a van this week, temps were already in the 90s, making temps inside the enclosed van life-threatening. The situation was urgent … and as we opened the van doors, we quickly discovered it was even worse than we had expected.
Cats were everywhere inside the van with no access to food or water.  A test of ammonia levels showed they were dangerously high. Sadly, the cats were not the only ones who were suffering in these toxic, soon-to-be deadly conditions, their owner was in the van as well. It was a heartbreaking sight.

0829_masoncitycats_eappeal_Content05

As temps continued to rise, our team worked quickly and carefully to get all 29 cats out of the heat and into our air-conditioned vehicles, where they were able to take their first breaths of clean air in a long time.

Back at the shelter, our veterinary team met the rescuers to begin evaluating the cats and providing care. All of the cats were extremely hungry, eating ravenously as soon as we set out full bowls of food for them. Some of the cats had serious injuries and illnesses, including upper respiratory and eye infections. Two of the cats had something wrapped so tightly around their necks that it had resulted in deep, painful wounds.

Thankfully, rescue came in time for these cats. In the conditions they were in, it could have been so much worse.

Sadly, calls like this just keep coming – from all over the state – but when you donate today, either one-time or monthly, you’ll ensure we can continue to be able to provide emergency assistance to animals like these who have nowhere else to turn. Your donation will quite literally be lifesaving.

0829_masoncitycats_eappeal_Content04

Please give now to ensure we will be ready for the next call whenever or however it arrives.

Donate

P.S.: When you donate today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on these cats.

27 animals desperate for help

Posted on Aug. 22, 2024Oct. 3, 2025

Every shelter across the country is full right now, and the ARL is no different, but when we received a call to help 27 animals from a hoarding case in Wayne County, we couldn’t say no. They had nowhere else to turn. Now they need your help.
When our Animal Welfare and Response Team entered the small home with law enforcement, it was as bad as they feared. Twenty-two dogs were packed into the crowded space, barking, their coats a mess of mats and fecal matter. The stench of urine was stifling, and the carpet under the dogs’ feet was soiled and discolored. Four parrots were found living in filthy cages. Outside, a donkey was enclosed in a makeshift dog kennel so small it could only move a few steps in any direction.

0822_wayneco_eappeal_Content03

It was a heartbreaking case – a situation of suffering for humans and animals that we have seen all too often. Sadly, it’s the innocent animals that are caught in the middle in these situations.

When our team brought the animals back to the shelter yesterday afternoon, our Emergency Care Team immediately began examining, vaccinating and treating them. They had clearly been living in filth for a long time. Most of the dogs were suffering from severe matting, some had nails so long they can’t walk normally, and all have serious dental problems. One of the parrots is suffering from old injuries. Sadly, another was in such terrible body condition it was unable to be saved.

These animals had suffered terribly in their previous life, but with your help, they’ll never experience that horror again.

Your donation today will help these animals recover and start the next chapter of their lives free of pain and discomfort. Your monthly gift will make a difference for these animals and for the nearly 1,200 others who woke up in our care this morning.

Please give today to show these pets and so many others that beyond the suffering there is hope.

P.S.: When you donate today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on the animals from this case.

He was 500 pounds underweight

Posted on Jul. 25, 2024Oct. 3, 2025

0725_bruce_eappeal_Header

It was a sight we’d never seen and hope to never see again: A giant, shockingly thin horse being forced to pull a carriage in downtown Des Moines.
Not only was Bruce suffering from malnutrition when ARL Animal Services officers arrived, he was being forced to work in 90-degree heat. Attached to the heavy carriage, his ribs, hips and spine jutted from beneath his skin, he dripped in sweat, he had sores across his body, and his breathing was heavy. He had clearly been suffering for a long time.

An equine veterinarian at the ARL found that Bruce, a Percheron draft horse, was at least 500 pounds underweight for his breed.

No horse should have to suffer like this, much less work in such terrible condition.

0725_bruce_eappeal_Content01

Thankfully Bruce is now safe at the ARL and a judge has ruled that he should not be returned to his owner. He’s 19 hands high and has already gained about 100 pounds in our care while we awaited the court’s ruling, but it will be months before he is at a healthy weight and ready for adoption.

Bruce didn’t get this way overnight, and helping him gain the literal hundreds of pounds he needs to be healthy will be expensive. Your support now will mean everything to Bruce, who has been the kindest, most gentle patient despite all he has been through.

Your donation to our Second Chance Ranch Fund today will help provide food and medical care for Bruce now, and your monthly gift will help him and other horses like him recover from neglect and put them on the path to better lives. Plus, when you give now through July 30, your gift will be matched 10 TIMES, up to $25,000, thanks to a generous matching gift opportunity from American Equity as part of the ARL’s Day of Giving.

Give now to make 10X the difference for Bruce and other horses in need. You’ll show Bruce that there is hope. Life only gets better from here.

Donate

P.S.: Bruce’s owner, Ramsey Zimmerman, has been charged with livestock neglect, and the ARL is continuing to assist Des Moines Police with this case. When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll automatically be enrolled to receive updates on Bruce.

46 more dogs freed from a puppy mill

Posted on Jul. 12, 2024Dec. 29, 2025

0712_boonedoodles_eappeal_Header

Yesterday, just months after helping rescue more than 100 dogs from a puppy mill in Boone County, the ARL team was back on the same property … this time working with authorities to free 46 MORE dogs and puppies from the cycle of commercial breeding.
And this time – finally – the puppy mill where these dogs had lived their entire lives in cages is no longer operating.

0712_boonedoodles_eappeal_Content3

While the dogs are now safe, they need your help as they embark on their journeys of healing.

Most of the dogs will need medical and dental surgeries, and many will need grooming to remove the painful mats they’d been living with. Most are undersocialized and will need behavioral help to learn to trust humans. Some are still nursing and will need weeks of care as they grow. All will need spay and neuter surgeries to ensure their breeding days are behind them.

Donate

0712_boonedoodles_eappeal_Content4

After all they’ve been through, these dogs deserve every chance at happiness. Please support their care as they recover from lives no dogs should have to endure.

Your gift today – or your monthly gift – will also help provide care for these dogs and others at a time when our kennels are already full and our resources are stretched thin – we’re so full, our team had to rush to set up emergency overflow housing to prepare for this scale of dogs! We could not leave them there.

0712_boonedoodles_eappeal_Content2

With so many in need and the calls for help still coming in, we simply can’t do this alone. These dogs need you now. Help them start their new lives with a gift today.

Donate

P.S.: When you donate today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on these dogs. You can read the story of the original puppy mill rescue here.

Hazel didn’t deserve this

Posted on Jun. 10, 2024Oct. 3, 2025

0604_hazelnut_eappeal_Header

Hazel is in desperate need of help.
She arrived emaciated, dehydrated and so frail she could not walk. She had clearly been starving for a very long time.

What’s even more heartbreaking is how very sweet she is. She brightens up when she sees people. She wants love and leans into our touch.

We don’t know how she got to this point, but she needs your help now.

0523_moe_eappeal_Content_02

Hazel deserves a chance, and we are committed to doing everything we can for her, but we can’t do it alone.

Your gift to our Full Bellies Food Fund will help Hazel on her journey to recovery and make it possible to keep bowls and bellies full for other starving animals that arrive in our care. Your monthly gift will help Hazel now and make sure that she and other pets who have experienced unimaginable neglect and cruelty only know love from now on.

Hazel did not deserve to suffer like this. Give now to give her the second chance she deserves.

P.S.: When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on Hazel.

60 animals were suffering

Posted on Apr. 17, 2024Dec. 31, 2025

0416_chi_eappeal_Header

It happened again. Late in the day, we received a call from law enforcement asking us to help rescue dozens of animals from horrible conditions. There were 60 dogs and cats living inside the property, where, sadly, deceased dogs had also been found. A visit from a member of our Mobile Rescue Team confirmed these animals couldn’t wait.

0416_chi_eappeal_Content_03

We immediately deployed more ARL rescuers. What we found was heartbreaking: 57 dogs and puppies, some just days old, and 3 cats were trapped inside the home. The floors of the house were covered in trash and feces, and the smell was overwhelming. Some dogs were trapped in kennels while others roamed free.

Donate

The dogs themselves were in terrible shape. All were crawling with fleas, and many had skin that was red and raw from scratching. Some, including young puppies, had hair loss all over their bodies. Several dogs had scarred, cloudy eyes. One hopped around on three legs, holding her fourth up at an odd angle.

0416_chi_eappeal_Content_02

Our team removed each of the animals one by one until all had been rescued, returning to the shelter with the last load late into the evening. Back at the shelter, our Miracle Medical Team was waiting. With so many animals arriving in such poor condition, we needed all hands on deck. Some medical staff who had finished their shifts for the day returned just to help these dogs.

Donate

The dogs with the worst skin immediately began antibiotics and some were given medicated baths. A dog with a painful leg condition was started on pain medication. Our veterinarians have determined that multiple dogs will need knee and dental surgeries. We can’t do this without you.

0416_chi_eappeal_Content_04

Your gift today to our Miracle Medical Fund will help give these pets and others like them the care they need to start over and begin their new lives free from suffering. Your monthly gift will help ensure we can always be there to answer the call to help animals in need.

These animals did not deserve to live like this, but you can give them hope. With your help, their futures will be bright.

Donate

P.S.:  The investigation into this situation is ongoing. When you donate today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on the animals from this case.

These dogs and puppies deserved better

Posted on Feb. 16, 2024Dec. 31, 2025

0216_GSP_eappeal_header

Nine dogs who had been living in a cramped, filthy wire kennel inside a Webster City home are now safe at the Animal Rescue League after our Mobile Rescue Team was called to assist Webster City Police with a case of alleged animal neglect on Valentine’s Day.

Our team arrived at the residence to find dogs and puppies living in their own waste with barely room to move a few steps in any direction. All of them reeked of urine and feces, and most were covered in scars and healing wounds.

0216_gsp_eappeal_content 03

Back at the shelter, our medical team examined each dog thoroughly, and what they found was even more heartbreaking. One of the four adults is especially thin and has old wounds and scarring across her body from what were likely repeated attacks in the stressful environment.

But it is the five puppies who are most concerning. All of them are thin and covered in old and healing wounds. The repeated untreated injuries have caused such trauma to their bodies that their heads appear misshapen. Many have multiple large lumps, either from current injuries or scar tissue. Injuries to one young puppy have left one side of his face swollen and scarred. All are being treated for fleas, worms, parasites and diarrhea, and all are receiving antibiotics to help them heal.

0216_9 GSP_eappeal_Content 01

While the puppies are shy, the adult dogs were so happy to have space to finally move around that they were doing zoomies in our exam room. We can’t imagine the mental suffering they endured living in a cramped kennel for so long.

These dogs didn’t deserve this – no animal does – but your gift today can change their lives.

0216_9 GSP_eappeal_Content 04

When you give today you’ll help provide healing for these dogs and other animals who arrive injured and neglected, and when you make a monthly gift you’ll ensure we can continue to answer calls for help so animals like these dogs don’t have to suffer one day longer.

With your help these dogs will never again know the horrors of their previous life, and once they’re healed they’ll have the chance to find the loving homes they’ve always deserved.

Show these dogs love…and give them hope…with a gift today.

P.S.:  Dennis Russell Goodrich, 63, of Webster City was arrested and charged with animal neglect in connection with this case. When you donate today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on these dogs and puppies.

Freedom for 30 dogs bred for profit

Posted on Jan. 29, 2024Dec. 31, 2025

0129_shibas_eappeal_Header

The ARL Mobile Rescue team has been deployed to remove hundreds of dogs from commercial breeders and puppy mills over the last few months, and the latest call for help was just days ago.

We arrived to find 30 dogs and puppies who were left over after a commercial breeder in Eastern Iowa chose not to renew their license. One by one our rescue team began opening the doors to each cage – literally opening the doors to a new life … a life that, with your help, will look very different from what these dogs have ever known.

0129_shibas_eappeal_Content_02

They had never been outside of the small confines of the breeding operation.

They have never known the comfort of a home or the love of a family.

They have never experienced freedom.

Little did they know, their lives were just beginning.

0129_shibas_eappeal_Content_04

As our veterinary and behavior teams examined each dog, some of the dogs were carrying the scars from their previous life quite literally on their bodies. The dogs range in age from tiny puppies to adults.  All will need help and patience while learning to trust people. They will need time to know that they are safe. Many will need medical treatments and dental surgeries, too, and of course they will all need spay/neuter surgeries to end the cycle they were born into.

While we can’t change their past, you can change their future.

When you give today – whether one-time or monthly – you’ll be putting these dogs and puppies, and so many other animals, on the path to a new and better life.

Help these dogs now to give them hope for the homes and families they’ve never had and the lifetime of love they’ve always deserved.

Donate

P.S.:  When you donate today or join our Loyal Friends Club to become a monthly donor, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on these dogs and puppies. Special thanks to Iowa City Animal Control for initiating this rescue and their partnership on the scene.

Nearly 100 Dogs Rescued from Puppy Mill

Posted on Sep. 26, 2023Dec. 29, 2025

09026_Doodles eappeal_Header

Behind the eyes of many of the adorable puppies selling for thousands of dollars hides the horrors of the dogs they leave behind at some of Iowa’s worst puppy mills. These breeders, many operating illegally without licenses, care more about profits than the dogs.

Over the weekend we received an urgent call from the Boone County Humane Society and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office to help rescue nearly 100 dogs from a commercial breeder – if we didn’t help, the dogs would have to stay behind – so our Mobile Rescue Team immediately hit the road for the hour drive to the property.

0925_ boone co doodles

When we arrived the smell hit us before we even entered the buildings. The dogs were living in their own feces and urine, including some pregnant mamas and newborn puppies. Many of the dogs were matted and some incredibly thin. One by one we carried them to clean crates so they could begin the journey toward their new lives.

Meanwhile, back at the ARL it was all hands on deck. Our kennels were already full, but these dogs couldn’t wait, so our team rushed to set up temporary housing to prepare for this unexpected influx of dogs. Our medical team also quickly came together and gathered the large number of supplies needed to provide care for each and every dog and puppy. When the dogs arrived, our teams worked into the evening to make sure they were all cared for and comfortable.

While these dogs are now safe, in some ways their journey is just beginning. Your gift today will help provide the care these dogs need until they’re ready to find the loving homes they’ve always deserved. You’ll also be supporting the hundreds of dogs – and cats, rabbits, horses and other animals – that were already in our care before this urgent call for help. With so many animals in need, we simply can’t do this without you.

Whether you choose to give a one-time gift or give monthly, you’ll show these dogs and puppies that you’re here for them today and every day … and give them hope for better days ahead.

Donate to Help

P.S.: When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on these dogs.

Roadside Zoo: ARL Assists in Rescue & Removal of Hundreds of Animals in Eastern Iowa

Posted on Oct. 1, 2021Oct. 3, 2025

UPDATE (09/30/21): The owners of Cricket Hollow Zoo have been ordered to pay $70,000 or serve 5 months in jail for violating court orders regarding the relocation of animals at their roadside attraction. The ruling this week in the contempt-of-court case against Pamela and Thomas Seller comes just 3 days after the Iowa Supreme Court declined to review a lower court decision in the case that led to the zoo’s closure in 2019. The ARL assisted with the removal of hundreds of animals from the zoo in December 2019. (Source: Iowa Capital Dispatch)

UPDATE (08/06/21): Court of Appeals upholds decision closing Cricket Hollow Zoo (Source: Iowa Capital Dispatch)

UPDATE (11:45AM, 12/13/19): After yesterday’s rescue, the total number of animals rescued from Cricket Hollow Zoo this week now exceeds 400…and counting. Rescuers had cleared every building allowed in the court order after Monday’s rescue, but upon returning on Thursday, new animals had been placed in those buildings, so those animals were rescued and removed on Thursday.

Many more animals are still missing and anyone with information regarding the missing animals is encouraged to contact the Animal Legal Defense Fund at aldf@aldf.org.

Blank Park Zoo also joined the Animal Rescue League of Iowa teams at the Cricket Hollow Zoo property today to assist with this rescue.

UPDATE (4:15PM, 12/12/19): Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) officials were back at the Cricket Hollow Zoo in Manchester, Iowa today on a continued court order. ARL Mobile Rescue Teams discovered dozens more animals on the property that were previously missing from the first rescue, but many more animals are still missing, so the investigation continues.

Anyone with information regarding the missing animals is encouraged to contact the Animal Legal Defense Fund at aldf@aldf.org.

We will provide another update on numbers and species of animal rescued as soon as it’s available.

Animals removed from roadside Manchester zoo after living in deplorable conditions

DES MOINES, Iowa – Today, many animals ranging from black bears to hamsters are being rescued from Cricket Hollow Zoo, a roadside zoo in Manchester, Iowa.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund, Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL), The Wild Animal Sanctuary (TWAS), and additional partnering organizations are working together to remove the animals in blustery conditions Monday and transport the animals to quarantine and triage facilities. Veterinarians are on scene, and each animal is receiving a medical evaluation. The animals will now receive the medical care that they urgently require.

This rescue represents a massive undertaking. The animals being rescued from deplorable conditions include two black bears, three cavies, four skunks, three coyotes, multiple raccoons, a wallaby, and three baboons, as well as numerous rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, rats, fish, and birds. Among the birds are finches, parakeets, and pigeons. The ARL will be bringing 3 cats, 33 rats, 27 mice, 11 raccoons, 5 miniature horses, 3 donkeys, fish, pigs, and possibly additional animals back to their location in Des Moines for treatment, rehabilitation, and eventual adoption or sanctuary placement.

On November 25, 2019, Iowa District Court Judge Monica Wittig ruled in favor of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, finding Cricket Hollow Zoo had chronically neglected the animals — but defendants Tom and Pamela Sellner swiftly filed a motion to stay the ruling pending appeal in an attempt to derail the animals’ rescue. Acting Chief Justice David S. Wiggins of the Iowa Supreme Court denied the motion to stay on December 4, 2019 — clearing the way for today’s rescue.

This lawsuit is the third filed by the Animal Legal Defense Fund against Cricket Hollow Zoo and has effectively shut the zoo down. In a previous lawsuit against Cricket Hollow Zoo, the Animal Legal Defense Fund set a critical legal precedent: that the Endangered Species Act applies to listed species in captivity, as well as those in the wild. That lawsuit, decided in 2016 by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa and affirmed by the Eighth Circuit in 2018, concerned the treatment of four tigers and three lemurs. An additional Animal Legal Defense Fund lawsuit filed in 2016 against Cricket Hollow Zoo resulted in the rescue of two African lionesses — Jonwah and Njjarra.

Cricket Hollow Zoo had its exhibitor’s license revoked by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in December 2017 after the Animal Legal Defense Fund sued the USDA for reissuing the license despite the numerous violations the government agency had issued against the roadside zoo. The Sellners appealed the decision and the revocation appeal is pending.
