Dogs rescued in alleged abuse case

Posted on Nov. 21, 2025Nov. 21, 2025

Our team has responded to numerous cases of animal cruelty across the state in just the past few months, but this time the horror was in our own city.

Yesterday, ARL Animal Services officers assisted Des Moines Police in rescuing two dogs, named Supreme and Legend, after an investigation into a 911 call about a man violently abusing a dog in a downtown neighborhood. Investigators found video evidence that showed a helpless dog, identified as Supreme, being punched, slammed to the ground and slammed into a wall.

1121_2dogs_eappeal_Content01

When our team arrived at the residence, they were shocked to find not only the poor dog seen in the video, but a second smaller dog who was extremely underweight, dehydrated, and trapped in a kennel. Our team rushed both dogs to the ARL, where our Miracle Medical Team immediately began evaluating them and providing care.

These dogs did not deserve this – no animal does. Even more heartbreaking is how incredibly kind both of them are, even after all they’ve been through. Both greeted our team with soft eyes and hopeful tail wags. Supreme loves to offer us kisses, and Legend climbs into any open lap and snuggles in. They both want love so badly they can’t get close enough.

Sadly, calls like this just keep coming – from all over the state – but when you donate today, or make a monthly gift, you’ll ensure we can continue to provide emergency assistance and safety to animals like these so they don’t have to suffer one day longer.

While we can’t change Supreme and Legend’s past, you CAN change their future. Please give a gift of healing and hope to show them, and so many others, that better days are ahead.

Donate

P.S.: When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on these dogs.

37 animals in urgent need of help

Posted on Nov. 19, 2025Nov. 19, 2025

When our Animal Welfare & Response Team responded to an urgent call from law enforcement to help dozens of animals living in a single-wide mobile home in southern Iowa, they were overwhelmed by the chaos they found. There were dogs and cats everywhere – 37 total – and our rescuers could hardly move with so many bodies milling about in such a small space, all desperate for help.

The floors were covered in animal waste. The floorboards, saturated with urine, were soft beneath our team’s feet. Roaches skittered everywhere. Many of the animals were clearly sick, and all were crawling with fleas. One thin puppy had a painfully bloated belly, and other dogs were suffering from skin issues and hair loss. Many of the cats were suffering from upper respiratory infections, and some had untreated ulcers that were eating away at their lips.

1118_37dogscats_eappeal_Content01

These animals needed help – and fast. Despite our already full kennels and stretched resources, our team again rushed to prepare temporary emergency housing for these latest rescues. When they arrived, our Miracle Medical Team immediately began examining each animal and providing treatment.

These pets are now recovering and many have a long road ahead of them. We can’t do this without you.

Your gift today will help these pets and so many others heal and start the next chapter of their lives free of pain and discomfort. Your monthly gift will ensure we can continue to be there for pets in crisis, just like these.

Plus, when you give now through Nov. 30, your gift will be doubled – up to $40,000 – thanks to a generous match opportunity from Bob and Jodi Matthews.

Please give now to make twice the impact and show these animals – and so many more – that there is hope.

100+ dogs rescued from terrible conditions

Posted on Sep. 24, 2025Jan. 9, 2026

0924_PlymouthCodogs_eappeal_Header

When we received an urgent call from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s office about 100+ dogs living in dangerous conditions, we were already stretched to our limits. Our kennel space has been at a critical level for months – when one kennel opens, it immediately fills up again. But we couldn’t say no to these dogs.

0924_PlymouthCodogs_eappeal_Content01

When our team arrived at the property yesterday, they found dogs and young puppies living in toxic conditions in multiple locations. The majority were living in a house in areas covered in urine and feces. About 40 more were shut in a small shed in similar conditions. The stench was suffocating, and tests showed ammonia levels in both structures were dangerously high. We can only imagine what it was like for them to breathe this air every day. It was no wonder we were met with a chaos of barking and a stampede of little feet as we approached. The poor dogs were desperate for clean, breathable air.

0924_PlymouthCodogs_eappeal_Content04

Back at the shelter it was all hands on deck. With no space inside the main shelter facility, our team once again got to work building the emergency housing needed to accommodate another huge influx of animals.

When the dogs arrived, our medical team immediately began evaluating and treating them. Most are terribly matted, some with feces embedded in their fur. Most need dental surgeries and spay/neuter surgeries. One dog has a large, concerning mass that shows signs of infection. Our teams worked into the evening to make sure they were all cared for and comfortable – making this a 12+ hour operation.

0924_PlymouthCodogs_eappeal_Content02

This morning, these dogs and puppies woke up in safety. They’re finally receiving the care they need and deserve, but they have a long road ahead, and adding 100 dogs to our already full shelter puts an incredible strain on our already stretched resources. We can only do this kind of lifesaving work with your support.

These dogs – and the 1,400+ other animals in our care – need you now. Your compassionate gift today will help provide the food and medical care they need and put them on the path to a better life. Your monthly gift will help us continue to provide expert care to all the animals who depend on us and ensure our skilled rescue team can always to be there for animals in need – whether it be one or dozens at a time.

11 dogs were desperate for help

Posted on Aug. 19, 2025Oct. 3, 2025

0819_pocacodogs_eappeal_Header

11 dogs who had been living in terrible conditions at a Pocahontas County residence are now safe at the Animal Rescue League after our Animal Welfare & Response Team responded to a call to assist law enforcement.
Our team arrived to find seven dogs in a house and four dogs trapped in the bathroom of a camper on the same property. In both areas, feces, urine and other debris covered the floors. The smell was overwhelming, and our rescuers’ eyes burned as they removed each dog.

0819_pocacodogs_eappeal_Content02

The dogs themselves were in rough shape, one poor dog so painfully matted she could not move normally. Others were suffering from hair loss, skin issues and curled, overgrown nails. There were already nearly 1,400 pets in our care, but these 11 couldn’t wait. They needed help.

Back at the shelter, our team prepared emergency housing for these new arrivals, and our Miracle Medical Team examined each pup one by one and developed treatment plans to begin their healing process. Some dogs will require further medical treatment. Others will need behavior help. No matter what kind of care they need, we’re committed to giving them the second chances they deserve.

0819_pocacodogs_eappeal_Content03

We were able to answer the call to help these 11 dogs, but we never know when the next one will come. Your gift, whether one-time or monthly, will help ensure we can always be there so animals like these dogs don’t have to suffer one day longer.

Please give now to provide safety, healing and hope for these dogs and so many more pets like them.

P.S.: When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on these dogs.

32 more dogs rushed to safety

Posted on Jul. 10, 2025Oct. 3, 2025

0610_corgis_eappeal_Header

Less than two years after helping remove 30 dogs from an unlicensed breeder in Cedar County, the ARL team was back on the same property … this time working with authorities to rescue 32 MORE dogs.
We already had more than 1,200 animals in our care, and our dog kennels were full, but the call was urgent. These dogs had nowhere else to go.
Our animal care team rushed to prepare emergency overflow housing for the dogs, and our rescue team hit the road for the 4-hour round trip to bring the dogs safely to the shelter. Our veterinary and care teams met the dogs when they arrived. Some were terrified. Some needed medical treatments. All of them were in need of care.

0610_corgis_eappeal_Content02

We were able to answer the call this time … but we know another call is coming … and more after that. We can only help as much as our resources and space allow.

We need your support now to ensure we can continue to say “yes” when animals need us the most.

0610_corgis_eappeal_Content01

When you give today, you’ll be supporting these 32 newest rescues, as well as the hundreds of animals that were already in our care before this urgent call. You’ll also ensure our team of rescuers and caretakers can continue to be there for pets in need, no matter the situation.

Your support, either one-time or monthly, is needed now more than ever. That next call could come any day. Pets in crisis – like these 32 dogs – are counting on you.

Donate

P.S.: When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on these dogs.

2 more heartbreaking rescues

Posted on Jul. 9, 2025Oct. 3, 2025

0627_catsandogs_eappeal_Header

It’s the height of summer – a time when our shelter is already full – and the calls just keep coming. Law enforcement agencies are reaching out daily – a spike from even a few weeks ago – and our rescue team has been mobilizing quickly and repeatedly when animals need us most.
In just a matter of days, we removed 53 animals from two heartbreaking situations.

0627_catsandogs_eappeal_Content01

In Franklin County, an individual reached out seeking help for dozens of cats in a tough situation after their owner became unable to care for them. We arrived to find 36 cats and kittens living in unsanitary conditions and greatly in need of help. Many of the adult cats had clearly not had much socialization with humans, and it took our skilled and patient team two separate rescues to move all the cats to the shelter for much-needed care.

Many of the kittens were underweight – some severely – so we placed all of them in our Kitten Nursery. Sadly, despite our best efforts, some were so frail and sick we were unable to save them. Others’ conditions are touch and go, and they remain in our nursery under the close watch of our medical team.

0627_catsandogs_eappeal_Content03

Less than 48 hours after we rescued the last cat, our Animal Welfare & Response Team was up before dawn deploying to Decatur County. We’d assisted deputies in removing multiple dogs from a filthy trailer just 7 months ago, and now there were 17 more dogs that needed help.

We arrived to find underweight dogs peering through the trailer’s broken windows, living in their own waste and desperate to escape. And they weren’t just inside the trailer this time. At a location nearby, we discovered three more dogs from the group crammed into a small crate – with one dog’s head stuck between the wire bars. Thankfully our team was able to jump in and free the poor dog before she was injured.

Donate

Back at the ARL, the dogs ate ravenously. In addition to being thin, all were suffering from tick and flea infestations. Many of the dogs were undersocialized, and some were paralyzed with fear. They are now under the care of our medical and behavioral teams and have been placed on individualized plans to meet their needs. We’ve seen progress already, but it will likely be weeks before some are ready for adoption.

These 53 animals pushed our shelter population to more than 1,300 pets – and the calls are not slowing. The only way we can continue to respond to pets in crisis – and give second chances to all the animals that come through our doors – is with the help of friends like you.

Ryder was rescued just in time

Posted on Jun. 10, 2025Oct. 3, 2025

0604_ryder_eappeal_Header

A small dog curled up by the train tracks. Cold and alone. Just skin and bones.
Thankfully a good Samaritan spotted Ryder and stopped their car to help. Up close, it was clear he needed more assistance than they could give, so they bundled him in a towel and rushed him to the Animal Rescue League.
When we unwrapped Ryder, our hearts broke at the sight of him. He was skeletal. The kind of thin that hurts to look at. His ribs and hip bones pressed against his skin in sharp lines. He was cold to the touch and very pale. His frail body had nothing left to protect him. No fat, no muscle, no reserves. We don’t know how much longer he would have survived without help.

0604_ryder_eappeal_Content02

Our Miracle Medical Team jumped into action, rehydrating him, treating the wounds on his legs, beginning his slow refeeding journey – a process that must be done carefully, one meal at a time – to help his starved body reacclimate safely to nutrition.

Ryder has already shown some improvement – his weak and tired body is beginning to perk up. There is some light in his eyes, and he leans into us for pets. Little milestones that give us hope. But he still has a long way to go, and he needs your help.

0604_ryder_eappeal_Content01

When you give today, you’ll provide lifesaving care and rehabilitation for Ryder and other survivors of suffering. Ryder didn’t ask for this to happen to him, but with your help we can not only put him on the road to recovery but make sure he will know love from now on.

Sadly, the need is high, but with your support – whether one-time or monthly – we can help Ryder now and always be ready to answer the next call for lifesaving care, which may only be days away.

Donate

P.S.: When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive updates on Ryder.

27 cats in crisis

Posted on Dec. 12, 2024Oct. 3, 2025

1212_bremercocats_eappeal_Header

When deputies responded to a medical call at a rural residence, they were shocked to also come across another level of suffering – dozens of sick cats living in extremely poor conditions alongside the residents.
Deputies contacted our Animal Welfare & Response Team, who hit the road in the early hours yesterday for the 2.5-hour drive across the state in the cold and snow to help these cats in crisis.
When our rescue team arrived at the dirty, dilapidated house, we found nearly all of the cats were suffering from serious upper respiratory infections and eye inflammation, and all of them were crawling with fleas and ear mites – likely caused by the living conditions and lack of vet care.

1212_bremercocats_eappeal_Content01

For most of the 27 cats, this life was all they’d ever known. Situations like these are incredibly heartbreaking for all involved, and sadly innocent animals are caught in the middle.

The cats are now under the care of our Miracle Medical Team and are finally receiving the help they need. It will take weeks to provide the ongoing care each cat requires, and that’s where they need you.

The resources required to care for large influxes of pets is incredibly draining, so please make an urgent gift today. Whether you make a one-time gift to help these cats right now or choose to give monthly to be there for these cats and so many more pets who will arrive in desperate need in the new year, you’ll be providing the hope and healing that these vulnerable animals deserve.

While we can’t change their past, YOU can change their future. Please give a gift of healing and hope to show these cats, and so many others, that better days are ahead.

P.S.: When you donate now or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll automatically be enrolled to receive updates on these cats. While our role in this case is to help the animals, local authorities are working to assist the people in this situation.

These pups deserved better

Posted on Nov. 25, 2024Dec. 31, 2025

1125_decaturcodogs_eappeal_Header

When our Animal Welfare & Response Team was called to assist the Decatur County Sheriff in removing multiple dogs trapped in a filthy trailer, they arrived to see puppies poking their heads out of broken windows, looking for a way out.
Inside the trailer, the dog and four adolescent puppies were living in chaos in a tight space filled with feces, trash, and destroyed furniture. All were emaciated with no access to food or water. Even through their fur, their hipbones jutted out and we could see every rib. They needed help – and fast.

1125_decaturcodogs_eappeal_Content01

Our rescue team rushed them back to the ARL, where our Miracle Medical Team was waiting to provide care. We found that the puppies weighed less than HALF of what they should for their age and the adult dog was also shockingly thin. All were suffering from dehydration. When we offered treats as we examined them, they ate ravenously, frantically licking up every little crumb and searching every corner of the room for more.

We made them comfortable in clean kennels with soft bedding and gave them the first good meal they’d had in a long time. All have been started on feeding plans to help them gain weight safely under the care of our veterinarians.

1125_decaturcodogs_eappeal_Content03

While these pups are now safe, their healing is just beginning. Your gift today can give them hope.

When you give today, you’ll provide healing to these pups and so many others like them who arrive at the ARL in need of help every day. Your monthly gift will ensure we can always answer the call for pets in need no matter how many or how far away they are.

Plus, this month your gift will be doubled – up to $25,000 – thanks to a generous match granted by the board of directors of the ARL Foundation. It’s an incredible opportunity to make 2X the impact for suffering pets just like these pups.

Please give now to provide healing, hope and love to pets who need it most.

P.S.: When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll automatically be enrolled to receive updates on these pups.

46 horses needed immediate help

Posted on Nov. 23, 2024Dec. 31, 2025

When the ARL got the urgent call from the Dallas County Sheriff’s office to assist with the removal of 46 horses – many injured and thin, with little to no food and water – our rescue team quickly prepared for our largest horse rescue operation in years.

When we arrived at the property, it was worse than we had imagined. We saw horses with open wounds. Ribs and hipbones were visible on many, and some were emaciated. The horses were so hungry, they pushed against the edges of the makeshift fencing, trying to reach anything edible. We saw one who was so hungry he had resorted to eating sharp thistles.

Temps were freezing cold, and in a barn occupied mostly by very young horses and mamas, all of the water troughs were frozen. The young horses pawed at the ice over and over with their small hooves, trying in vain to break it.
These horses needed help, and we didn’t have any time to lose. For the next 13 hours our team worked to move each and every horse onto our trailers and get them to safety at our Second Chance Ranch – making trip after trip, back and forth, until every last horse was rescued.

Two of the horses with the most severe conditions – one with a gaping, infected neck wound and another suffering from severe emaciation – were taken to an equine veterinarian for immediate care. The emaciated horse in particular is lucky to be alive.

These horses did not deserve this – no animal does.

These horses are now safe at our Second Chance Ranch. They finally have clean enclosures, food and water, and they are finally receiving much-needed medical care under the supervision of equine veterinarians.

But 46 horses – especially ones in this condition – are a lot to take on. It’s only because of you that we are able to continue to answer these calls for help and provide the care that suffering animals so desperately need.

Your gift today – whether one-time or monthly – will help ensure we can always be there for animals in crisis. Plus, this month your donation will make twice the impact, thanks to a generous matching gift opportunity in memory of Michael and Greta Hayward and their love of animals. Your gift will be doubled, so you’ll make 2X the difference!

P.S.:  The investigation is ongoing and the ARL is continuing to assist authorities in this case. When you give today or join our Loyal Friends Club monthly giving program, you’ll automatically be enrolled to receive updates on these horses.
