Adopting a Cat from a Hoarding Situation

Posted on Nov. 17, 2022Oct. 3, 2025

Hoarding CatsCats that come from hoarding situations have spent most of their lives with other cats and many times have had very little contact with people.

They can be fearful in new situations, especially when meeting new people and are usually not used to a carrier. However with time, patience, and positive reinforcement techniques like clicker training and play therapy, these cats can experience a reduction in their stress and become a part of the family.

What to Expect

When you first get your new cat home, they will likely be fearful and want to hide.

The best way to help your cat adjust to their new home is to set them up somewhere in your house that is small, like a bathroom or a spare room. In this room, provide everything they will need: food, water, a litterbox, a bed, and toys. Visit them every day, several times a day, doing positive things when you’re with them, like talking to them, offering high-value treats or engaging in play. Once they become comfortable in their room and with you and begin seeking attention, you can let them out into the rest of your house. It may be best to start with another small area of your house and build up to giving them total access.

They may always be fearful of new situations and new people.

Due to a lack of socialization from kittenhood, hoarding cats may always be quick to run and hide when people come over or when they hear loud noises or see fast movements. However, you can help them work through their fear and recover more quickly. One great way to help is by using positive reinforcement training techniques like using rewards or clicker training.

There are also stress-reducing products like Feliway that can help your new cat adjust in new situations.

They may never be a lap cat or enjoy being picked up and held.

Due to a lack of handling throughout their life, hoarding cats are often not used to being handled and may not be comfortable being in laps or may struggle when they are picked up. Using food rewards is a great way to help them become more comfortable with being handled. Every time your cat comes near you when you are sitting down, give them a treat, and as they stay longer, continue to positively reinforce that behavior with treats. If they ever get into your lap, continue to reinforce that behavior with treats but let them leave if they want. When picking up your cat, pair it with treats and remember to keep handling to a minimum and build up the amount of time as they become more comfortable. Until they becomes more comfortable, you can positively interact with them in other ways, such as play therapy or clicker training.

They may not be comfortable being in a carrier.

Most often, the only times a hoarding cat was ever placed in a carrier were the day they were taken from their home and during their time at the shelter. The best way to help your new cat be less fearful of the carrier is to work on positive reinforcement training. You can also leave the carrier out, allowing your cat to go in when they please and feed them treats in the carrier to help them begin to associate the carrier with good things.

Learn more about acclimating your cat to a carrier here.

They may do well in a home with other cats, but it’s always best to introduce new cats to your resident cats slowly.

Hoarded cats have spent their entire lives around cats and most prefer the company of cats. However it’s important to remember that your cat is coming into a completely new environment and will be meeting cats they do not know. It’s best to take things slow and use proper introduction techniques and positive reinforcement. This will help make introductions less stressful and set everyone up for success.

Learn more about how to introduce a cat to other cats here.

What Not to Do

  • Never force your cat to spend time with their new family or new people. Allow them the chance to approach and positively reinforce their interactions with people – for example, giving treats when they approach.
  • Never chase your cat. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to handle your cat for medicating or putting in a carrier, do not chase them around the house to catch them. Instead wait until they have settled somewhere, like their bed and then approach them.
  • Never punish your new cat for showing fearful behavior, such hissing or hiding, or showing any other unwanted behavior. Punishment will only make them fearful of you and can lead to aggression. Instead use positive reinforcement training to build trust with your cat and understand that it may take time for your new cat to settle in.

Cats and Christmas Trees

Posted on Dec. 7, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

Christmas trees and cats can be a recipe for chaos if you’re not careful. However, there are ways to ensure a successful holiday season for both your decor and your pets.

The following tips can help you introduce your cats to your Christmas tree without worry.

Set up the tree and leave it undecorated for a few days.

Give your feline friend time to adjust to the new item by setting up the tree without immediately decorating it.  Leave it for a few days, allowing your cat to adjust to the new smells and sights.

A tree being in the house is new to your cat, and once decorated, it can be hard for your cat to resist the glittery and shiny decorations. If you set the tree up without decorating it, your cat can get used to it being there. Once the tree is decorated, it won’t be such a ‘new adventure’ anymore, and your cat will be more likely to leave it alone.

Invest in a heavy-duty tree stand.

Make sure the tree is properly and safely secured in a tree stand. Invest in a heavy base. Even if you have an artificial tree, use a base that is meant for a real tree. If you buy an artificial tree, you may get a stand along with your tree, but it may not be sturdy enough to keep it standing should your pet decide to investigate it too closely.

You can add to the sturdiness of the base by attaching it to wood pieces. Note that when you put a tree skirt around the base of the tree, no one will see the stand anyway.

Anchor your tree to the ceiling or wall.

Anchoring the tree to a wall is a great way to ensure the tree doesn’t topple if your kitties start to get a little too curious. Position the tree against a wall in front of a large picture. Remove the picture from the wall and secure the tree to the wall in its place by using fishing line and a strong hook. After Christmas is over and the tree comes down, you just remove the fishing line, put the picture back, and no one will even notice!

Another way to anchor a tree is to place the tree under a spot where you have a hanging plant. Remove the plant from its hook, and tie the tree to the ceiling plant hook with fishing line. Again, after Christmas, put the plant back up and no one will be the wiser!

Decorate your tree with your cats in mind.

When you begin to decorate, leave the lower section of the tree bare of decorations at first to avoid temptation by your cat to play. When you begin to add ornaments, start a third of the way up. After a few days, add ornaments to the bottom section moving downward, but do not complete the tree just yet. Wait a few days to finish decorating. This will again give the cats time to adjust to the sparkling decorations before you finish adding ornaments to the tree where they will be in paws reach.

It is important to keep your felines in mind when choosing tree decorations and ornaments. Choose those that won’t be too tempting for your cats. Decorations that dangle a lot or are really lightweight are really tempting. Try to find ornaments that are heavier and don’t dangle a great deal. For example, shiny tinsel is enticing to cats and lightweight, but it is extremely dangerous, especially if swallowed.

Before putting the lights on your tree, coat the cords with Bitter Apple to prevent your kitties from chewing on them. You can also thread the cord of your lights through a piece of PVC tubing right where it plugs into the wall to further prevent your cats from chewing it. Since PVC tubing is typically white in color, you can paint the tubing a dark green so it isn’t noticeable.

Hang your ornaments with ribbon or decorative cording instead of using ornament hooks. Ornament hooks can be very dangerous to pets that may chew or swallow them. Coat the ribbon or decorative cording with Bitter Apple so your cats won’t chew them. The ornaments can then be tied securely to the tree.

When in doubt, distract.

If your cat shows an interest in the tree, place a corrugated cardboard scratching post nearby. You can also grow some ‘kitty greens’ for them (i.e. cat grass or catnip if you usually give your cat catnip) and place them near the tree. If you place things like the cardboard or ‘kitty greens’ near the tree, the cat will tend to be less interested in chewing or climbing the tree and more interested in the cardboard or ‘kitty greens’.

Sophie was stabbed and almost drowned

Posted on Nov. 17, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

UPDATE (11/17/20, 9:00 a.m)

Rosemary Buelow of Des Moines was found guilty of animal torture related to the cat Sophie. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2021, at 9 a.m. at the Polk County Historic Courthouse.

The next hearing for Ryan Johnson is currently scheduled for Dec. 3, 2020.

UPDATE (05/29/20, 9:39 a.m)

An additional person, Ryan Johnson, 38, was arrested and charged with Animal Torture yesterday afternoon in connection with the cat stabbing case. Ryan Johnson is no longer in the Polk County jail, but Rosemary Buelow remains in custody as of this morning. The Animal Rescue League would like to extend a huge thank you to the Des Moines Police Department for taking this case seriously and pursuing the investigation, which ultimately led to an additional arrest and charge.

Sophie is continuing to receive treatment in the ARL’s Miracle Medical Ward under the supervision of our veterinary team.

Ryan Johnson

ORIGINAL POST (05/29/20, 9:39 a.m)

The Animal Rescue League is always there for animals in need — every day, every hour — including this weekend at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning when we were called to assist Des Moines Police. We arrived to find something truly horrifying: A cat huddled in the bathroom, bleeding from multiple stab wounds, soaking wet, and terrified.

The woman allegedly responsible for the injuries is accused of repeatedly stabbing the cat, then trying to drown her when stabbing didn’t work.

Sophie with stab wound

We rushed the injured cat, and 2 others in the apartment, to the ARL, where our on-call veterinarian was waiting and ready to provide emergency care. The injured cat, whose name is Sophie, was suffering from 3 large stab wounds to her back. Her flesh was raw and bleeding, and the weapon had narrowly missed her spine. Sophie’s neck had also been sliced and she was suffering from a fifth stab wound near her shoulder.

Donate Now

We immediately started her on pain medications and antibiotics and gently cleaned her wounds to prepare her for what was next: The wounds on her back were so severe that they required a long line of staples to close. The wound near her shoulder is still very swollen and we don’t know yet if it will require surgery. We’re also watching her closely for signs of pneumonia from water inhalation. Despite all she has been through, Sophie is an incredibly sweet cat and a model patient.

Victims like Sophie are the reason our emergency responders — and our Miracle Medical Fund — are so critical. Had it not been for our team’s quick response and the emergency veterinary care we were able to provide in the middle of the night, Sophie may not have survived and she still has a long road ahead.

We don’t yet know what surgeries or procedures she will need during her recovery, but we know that with your help, Sophie will never again experience the terror she went through this weekend.

Your donation to our Miracle Medical Fund allows us to respond to the call for help for pets like Sophie at all hours, day or night. Your one-time donation today will help Sophie right now and your monthly donation will help Sophie and other animals who need life-saving help next.

With your help we can continue to provide critical care for pets who are hurt and in pain with nowhere else to turn.

P.S.: Rosemary Kay Buelow, 21, is currently in the Polk County Jail and charged with animal torture (photo below).

What the Federal PACT Act Means and Doesn’t Mean for Iowa’s Animals

Posted on Nov. 10, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

On Nov. 25, 2019, President Trump signed into law a bill making some cases of animal cruelty a federal felony.

The Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act is an amendment to a federal law specifically related to fetish “crush videos.” The original law made the production, possession, and sale of such videos a federal felony, but it did not criminalize the underlying act of cruelty itself. The PACT Act fills that gap by making the act of cruelty a federal felony.

However, the PACT Act only applies in very narrow circumstances related to crush videos, and then only in jurisdictions where no state or local laws apply. You can read more about the PACT Act at Govtrack.us

While this law is significant, the PACT Act does not apply to the vast majority of animal cruelty cases in Iowa and across the nation.

Iowa currently ranks 48th in the country for the effectiveness of its animal protection laws, but a bill (HF737) that was signed into law in 2020 makes several key improvements to Iowa’s companion animal cruelty laws, including increased penalties, improved definitions related to standards of care, and mental health evaluations and restrictions on future possession of animals in certain cases.

On June 29, 2020 Governor Reynolds signed HF737 into law, marking a huge victory for Iowa’s companion animals. The law went into effect July 1, 2020. To read more about what the law will do to protect animals, click here.

She Arrived with a Broken Leg and Pelvis

Posted on Jul. 24, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

Donate to Help

How does a young cat like this end up with a severely broken leg and pelvis?

We may never know how this poor kitty got these horrific injuries. But we do know she needs surgery right away to save her life.

Donate Now

Thankfully this very sweet cat, who we named Gracie, was brought to the Animal Rescue League. A tiny cat at just 6 pounds, she was very quiet and in severe pain when she arrived, with abrasions on her stomach and an obviously broken leg. She weakly tried to stand but her injuries were too severe.

Donate to Help Gracie

She was given pain medications immediately, and X-rays taken by our Emergency Care Team revealed even more serious injuries — she is not only suffering from a broken leg, but a broken pelvis, too.

Gracie deserves a second chance, and she needs your help now.

Donate Now

Donate to Help Gracie

Our Miracle Medical Fund exists for cats just like Gracie — ones who have suffered trauma, ones who arrive at the ARL in desperate need of help, ones who have nowhere else to turn. Your donation today will give this precious kitty the miracle she needs right now, and your monthly gift will help her and countless others who will arrive injured and in pain in the weeks to come.

So many animals like Gracie come to us with uncertain pasts, but with your support we can ensure they have the second chances … and happy futures … that they deserve. Please give now to help them heal. To give them hope. To be their miracle.

P.S., When you donate today to help Gracie or enroll in our Loyal Friends Club, you’ll be automatically enrolled to receive exclusive updates on her progress.

The “click” signifies to the learner that a reward will be coming. Since dogs don’t speak human (and we don’t speak dog), using a clicker will help to bridge the communication gap.

Kittens found with severe burns

Posted on May. 29, 2020Oct. 3, 2025
WARNING: ARTICLE CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGE

UPDATE (05/29/2020, 9:50 a.m.)

In partnership with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person(s) involved with the kittens that were burnt.  Anyone with information in this case should contact Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa at 515-223-1400 or submit the tips online at www.polkcountycrimestoppers.org.

The ARL would like to extend a huge thank you to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for utilizing this reward in their investigation. We hope it will help lead to a quick resolution in this case.

Hans and Greta underwent surgery yesterday and are recovering in the ARL’s Miracle Medical Ward under the close supervision of our veterinary team.

ORIGINAL POST (05/28/2020, 10:36 a.m.)

It’s been a truly horrific week of animal abuse in Des Moines: 2 dogs were starved to death by their owner, a cat survived a stabbing and drowning attempt by a woman who lived in the home, and now this: a box of 9 kittens set on fire with two suffering severe injuries and the others escaping with singed fur and ash.

We can’t even imagine the terror and pain they experienced. Our hearts ache just looking at them.

They need your help now.

Donate

Thankfully, Polk County Animal Control Officers were able to rescue the scared and injured 4-6-week-old kittens over multiple days. They brought the unharmed kittens to the ARL and the injured kittens to an after-hours emergency vet clinic. The two 4-week-olds with severe injuries arrived at the ARL’s Miracle Medical Ward yesterday and are receiving pain medications, antibiotics, burn cream, and eye medication to manage their pain and treat their burns.

The two kittens, who we named Greta and Hans, are receiving critical surgery today to remove the dead tissue from their burns, make them more comfortable, and help their wounds heal. They are suffering from burns over much of their bodies, including all four paws and their ears, noses and lips. Greta is suffering from the most severe and extensive burns. She is lucky to have made it out when she did.

Greta and Hans will remain under the care of our three staff veterinarians, and their healing is expected to take months. We don’t know yet if they will need additional surgeries or procedures as they recover, but we do know that with your support, they will never again experience the horror they endured.

Your one-time donation to our Miracle Medical Fund today will help these fragile kittens and others in need of critical care right now, and your monthly donation will help them and countless others who will arrive at our doors needing lifesaving care.

Sadly, the need is high. We’ve been seeing more and more pets arrive at the ARL with severe injuries and nowhere else to turn. Your donation is needed now more than ever.

Please give now to heal injured pets. To give them hope. To make miracles happen.

Senate Bill HF737: Must Pass Without Amendment

Posted on Jan. 28, 2020Oct. 3, 2025

The Animal Legal Defense Fund just released its state animal protection rankings, and Iowa has surged… down to 49th, only ahead of Mississippi. This embarrassing ranking reflects the failure of our current law to properly define and punish animal cruelty. This is a gravely serious problem because it has been proven that unchecked violence towards animals leads to escalating violence against other people. Fortunately there’s an easy solution: HF737, which passed out of the Iowa House last year 96-0. Now the Senate needs to do its job, and pass HF 737 without amendment.

Email Your Senator

Just how bad are Iowa’s animal welfare laws? Recent stories speak for themselves and they are happening across the state: Trap a Chihuahua in its crate, and toss it into a dumpster to starve in Central Iowa? Simple misdemeanor, five days in jail. Severely beat a dog and cut its throat in Eastern Iowa? Aggravated misdemeanor, ten days in jail. Hang the family dog to death in the garage for barking too much in Central Iowa? Two years’ probation, no jail time.

How could the law let this happen? You’ll find the answer buried in the fine print. Iowa’s companion animal cruelty law, Chapter 717B, includes three levels of cruelty charges depending on the nature and extent of the conduct: neglect, abuse, and torture. Unfortunately, all three charges suffer from bad definitions and weak punishments.

The legal definition of “abuse” requires that the victim animal belong to someone else. We call it the “owner exception” and it means, under Iowa law, an owner can’t technically “abuse” their own animal. Next, the definition of “torture” requires the prosecutor to prove that the defendant had a “depraved or sadistic intent.” If you’re confused by that requirement, you’re not alone: even the Iowa Court of Appeals couldn’t decide what it means, and reversed a torture conviction in Eastern Iowa where the defendant had beaten a Boston terrier puppy to death with a baseball bat.

These defects in our cruelty laws force prosecutors to charge most cases as mere neglect, a misdemeanor offense. Even then, the definition of “neglect” is poor. To beat a neglect charge, a defendant only need prove they provided a “sufficient quantity” of food and water, and “adequate shelter.” The law does not require proper quality food, or that the water be potable. Nor does the law require even basic veterinary care. That issue prevented bringing charges in a recent case from Northern Iowa where the ARL rescued 13 dogs suffering from fleas, skin/ear infections, and severely overgrown nails that made it too painful to walk. These dogs won’t get justice thanks to our bad laws.

Even where prosecutors clear these hurdles and land a conviction, the punishment is typically a slap on the wrist. Consider one recent case: a grown man, angry at the family dog for chewing his sunglasses, held it down and repeatedly beat it with a belt and his closed fist. He even forced his child to record the incident as a warning to the other children. He received seven days in jail and a year of probation.

That case illustrates the grotesque and direct connection between violence against our companion animals and violence against other humans. The statistics are shocking:

  • Animal abusers are five times more likely to cause harm to other humans;
  • 85% of women and 63% of children entering domestic violence shelters also report animal abuse;
  • More than 80% of families being treated for child abuse were also involved in animal abuse;
  • 70% of all animal abusers have committed at least one other criminal offense and almost 40% have committed violent crimes against people;

Researchers call this “The Link.” Indeed, the research is so consistent that the FBI now tracks animal crime statistics nationwide. In other words, animal cruelty is a huge red flag that demands immediate intervention to prevent future violence.

Fortunately, there’s a solution ready to go: HF737, which would:

  • Remove the “owner exception” for abuse;
  • Remove the “depraved or sadistic intent” requirement for torture;
  • Improve the definition of neglect to require nutritionally sufficient food, access to potable water, sanitary living conditions free of waste, suitable shelter based on the animal’s specific needs, and veterinary care to relieve suffering;
  • Enhance the penalties for these offenses;
  • Make animal torture causing death a first-offense felony; and
  • Require defendants to undergo mental health evaluation and treatment in almost all cases to reduce the chance of future violence against humans.

This is not a radical change: our neighbors in Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin all have laws similar to HF 737. This is not a partisan issue; last year this bill passed unanimously (96-0) out of the Iowa House, and the Trump Administration recently passed its own animal welfare bill (for specific animal crimes that does not address the concerns covered in HF 737). Despite all of this, the future of HF 737 remains in doubt. Some Iowa Senators complain that this bill would harm the interests of livestock producers. This is nonsense. HF 737 makes zero changes to our livestock laws – this bill is for companion animals only.

If you care about protecting Iowa’s companion animals, preventing future violence against other people, and feel embarrassed that our laws rank so poorly, join me in telling the Iowa Senate to PASS HF737 WITHOUT AMENDMENTS. You can quickly and easily contact your Iowa Senator and sign up for weekly status updates at the ARL Humane Action Network.
