Pet Friendly Housing
A scarcity of pet-inclusive rental housing continues to be a barrier for pet owners across the U.S., including in the Des Moines metro. Despite the high volume of pet families seeking homes, many rental properties are not fully pet-inclusive, and either bar or restrict residents from keeping pets. Sadly, this is particularly acute for lower-income pet owners.
A 2021 Pet-Inclusive Housing report found that 72% of rental residents say that pet-friendly housing is hard to find. Even if a rental community is considered pet-friendly, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re pet-inclusive. Pet-inclusive housing provides an open and welcoming environment for all pets, while pet-friendly housing can still place significant restrictions on breeds or the size of pets, and may require additional pet fees.
