When we received a call from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office about more than a dozen animals in urgent need of help, our Animal Welfare & Response Team deployed before daybreak to make the two-hour drive to assist.
Arriving at the property with authorities, we found dogs, cats, chickens and reptiles living in extremely unsanitary conditions. The dogs and cats were living among their own feces. The reptiles were cold and thin – we were shocked some were still alive – and the chickens were emaciated and sick. Sadly, deceased animals were also found. It was clear that the surviving animals couldn’t wait.
Back at the shelter, our Miracle Medical Team immediately began examining each animal and providing care. Multiple cats were suffering from upper respiratory infections. One very underweight dog was walking on overgrown toenails caked in feces. The other dogs were thin and urine-stained.
Despite their condition, they were incredibly sweet. They leaned into our touch and placed their paws on us asking for affection. They wanted love so badly. These pets are now receiving the care they need, but their journeys are just beginning.
