When an ARL Animal Services officer stepped into a Des Moines home, the stench was overwhelming. Following the sounds of barking, the ARL officer discovered two large dogs in a basement, shut in separate wire crates, living in their own filth, with no food and no water.
There was also an empty wire crate with its door open, the floor covered in dry animal waste. That crate had housed a third dog, who sadly was already deceased by the time Animal Services officers were called.
Both of the surviving dogs were covered in their own waste and needed immediate help. The one in the worst condition, a dog named Blue, was so thin that her ribs, hips and spine were clearly visible. She was also extremely dehydrated. She weighed just 31 pounds.
We rushed both dogs to our medical team for immediate care. They are now safe and Blue has been placed on a special refeeding program to help her regain weight safely.
She is beginning her journey to recovery, but she is not out of the woods.
These dogs did not deserve to be treated like this, but your support today can give them hope that their worst days are behind them.
