Spaying and neutering your pets is so important … and not just to reduce unwanted litters. Sometimes it can be a matter of life and death.
When a stray black cat arrived at the ARL, it was clear that something was terribly wrong. She was a tiny cat, but her belly was huge and distended … and not because of pregnancy. She needed immediate help if she was going to survive.
We rushed her to our Miracle Medical Ward, where our veterinarians immediately suspected pyometra, a severe infection of the uterus. Without emergency surgery, she likely had days … if not hours … to live.
She was lucky she had made it to the ARL.
Our chief veterinarian rushed her into surgery, and what he found was horrific. Her swollen uterus filled her body cavity and the largest parts were the size of fists. Removing it required a 4-inch-long incision (vs. the half-inch incision required for a normal spay surgery). Once it was out, we found that her infected uterus weighed roughly a pound and a half.

Thankfully the little cat, who we named Priya, is now on the road to recovery. While her condition was nearly fatal, it is completely preventable. If she had only been spayed, she never would have gone through this trauma … or come this close to death.
