Spaying and neutering your pets is so important … and not just to reduce unwanted litters. Sometimes it can be a matter of life and death. For Birdie, an emergency spay surgery at the ARL saved her life.

Birdie arrived at ARL Animal Services with an extremely distended abdomen. We took her directly to our Miracle Medical Ward, where our staff veterinarian took X-rays and found she was suffering from pyometra, a severe infection of the uterus. Without emergency surgery, she likely would not survive the next 24 hours.
She was lucky to have arrived when she did.
We rushed Birdie into surgery and removed her swollen uterus. It weighed nearly 2.5 pounds – one of the worst cases of pyometra our veterinarian had ever seen.

Thankfully, we were able to give Birdie a second chance at life. While her condition was nearly fatal, it was also completely preventable. If Birdie had been spayed, she never would have gone through this trauma or come so close to death.
Spaying and neutering truly saves lives.
