(UPDATE 03/17/18, 12:30 p.m.) Update to the animal count: There were also 2 dogs rescued who are now in our Crisis Foster program until their owners are able to reclaim. The ARL’s Crisis Foster program provides temporary care for the pets of families or individuals experiencing a crisis due to domestic violence, natural disaster (e.g., fire, flood, evacuation), or other catastrophic events. The program serves as a safety net when there are no other options for the pets to be cared for, thus ensuring the safety of the family and their pet.
(03/17/18, 12:15 p.m.) The Animal Rescue League of Iowa’s (ARL) Mobile Rescue Team was called to assist Polk County officials early this morning to help rescue and remove animals from the apartment fire at 697 Sherrylynn Blvd, Pleasant Hill. Once fire crews gave permission to access the building, the ARL team went in and rescued 4 hedgehogs, 2 aquariums of fish, 2 dogs, and 2 cats. Sadly, an additional deceased cat was removed from the building and the ARL is now working with the owners to provide cremation services. The 2 living cats were reunited with their owners at the scene and the remaining animals were taken to the ARL’s main location at 5452 NE 22nd Street, Des Moines until they can be reclaimed by their owners.
This is the 4th emergency animal rescue the ARL has performed in the past 9 days.
