For Kids and Teens

Kids and teens can make a big difference in the lives of animals by helping with the many daily tasks that keep our shelter running smoothly. Volunteering is a fun and meaningful way to give back, learn new skills, and be part of a team that cares for pets every day.

Volunteering by Age

  • 17-year-olds can volunteer with a parent or guardian’s signature.
  • Ages 10-16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during their shift.
  • Ages 5-9 can participate in our Litter-ary Club (see below!), attend one of our camps, do an at-home project to help pets, and more!

Other ways to get involved

Litter-ary Club

Our Litter-ary Club invites young animal lovers, ages 5–16, to share the joy of reading with cats in our care. It’s a wonderful way for kids to build confidence in their reading skills while offering comfort, companionship, and enrichment to cats waiting for new homes.

How to get started:
Participants must first become a volunteer. Once orientation is complete, readers are welcome to spend time with cats in our adoptable cat community rooms or read outside the cat kennels on the second floor of our Clowder House during open hours.

*A parent or guardian must remain with their reader for the duration of each session. One parent or guardian may accompany up to two children, provided both are registered and have completed orientation.

Kids' Camps

The ARL offers seasonal kids’ camps through our Humane Education Program for future animal rescuers. Stay up-to-date on future activities by checking our Events Calendar!
