When our ARL Animal Services officer responded to a call about an injured dog, he found a horrific sight: a young dog with blood covering the front part of his body.
It happened again. Just as we were working to take in a large number of dogs from a case in southwest Iowa, another desperate call for help came in – this time on the other side of the state … and it was urgent.
Every shelter across the country is full right now, and the ARL is no different, but when we received a call to help dogs from a hoarding case we couldn’t say no.
At just 10 weeks old, little Churu was found in a field in a rural area with serious head wounds. Her head and neck were extremely swollen when she arrived. She hung her head, barely opening her eyes, too sick and painful to move.
It was nearly closing time when we received the urgent call. The good Samaritans had called multiple other shelters in their area and no one would help take in the 6 puppies they had found that were covered in ticks.
He is emaciated, incredibly frail and stained with urine. He struggles to stand and walk and has almost no muscle across his body. We were told he was found in a ditch.
The ARL urges people to adopt from their local shelter and has set a goal to find homes for 1,000 dogs by the end of the summer.
For the first time in their lives, 34 dogs woke up this morning in new beds, never again to spend another day inside a dog breeding operation.
Now is the season when we start seeing a big increase in calls asking for help with large-scale rescues all across the state. We already received one … from 3 hours away in northwest Iowa. A trailer home was full of cats living in terrible conditions
