The ARL was called to assist after a trailer overturned carrying 140 pigs. More than a dozen ARL staff mobilized in minutes and rushed to the scene. When staff arrived they saw the trailer on its side. The pigs were stacked on top of each other, many of them injured and in shock.
Willard William Street, 32, of Des Moines, was captured on video, allegedly repeatedly punching his dog with a closed fist. Des Moines Police arrested Street and charged him with one count of animal neglect (under 717B) and two counts of failure to license a pet.

UPDATE 12/01/17: The issue has been delayed in the city council, so discussion will be at a later date. We’ll update you when we know anything more. — The Des Moines City Council is considering a proposed change to the current urban chicken ordinance. The city council will be discussing the proposed ordinance at the council meeting on Monday, December 4 at 4:30 at 1551 E. MLK Jr. Pkwy. Those who are interested in commenting, are encouraged to attend.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) has released the number of animals’ lives they have saved from January through March this year. A total of 2,033 homeless pets were saved during this time period through adoption, returning lost pets to their owners, and transferring to other shelters through the ARL’s Transfer Partner program

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa’s (ARL) Animal Care & Control department recently received an anonymous tip to check on the welfare of rabbits at a Des Moines home. When the ARL Animal Control Officer arrived, they found 8 living and 1 deceased pet rabbits in wire hutches on the property.
