03/09/18 The ARL has assisted Des Moines Police in removing 104 chickens and roosters from a property in Des Moines.
Updated 4/3/18: 15 charges have been filed against Leland Moffitt for the 52 living and 8 deceased cats rescued from his Des Moines house.
The ARL team received a call from the Des Moines Police Department to assist with removing 6 dogs from a feces-covered home. There were also three very young children left home alone.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) assisted the Des Moines Police (DMPD) to remove 85 chickens and roosters from a property on the East side of Des Moines.
Nearly 60 Welsh ponies were found without any access to food or water. Two deceased ponies were also found. Of the living ponies, many had ribs that were visibly showing, hooves that had overgrown and curled up to the point of cutting their legs, hair loss, and other ailments. The youngest on the property was of nursing age and the oldest was about 31 years old.
Just before the disposition hearing for Paula Redding, to determine whether she would get back the 10 horses she’s charged with neglecting, she voluntarily signed them over to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL).
Otto arrived at the ARL in severe pain and with major injuries to both of his front legs. He is suffering from a dislocated left shoulder, and his right leg is severely broken.

The ARL Mobile Rescue Team was called to assist Polk County officials to help rescue and remove animals from an apartment fire in Pleasant Hill. The ARL team rescued 4 hedgehogs, 2 aquariums of fish, 2 dogs, and 2 cats.
