FIV+ cats
What is FIV? Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a viral infection that attacks a cat’s immune system, leaving the cat vulnerable to recurrent infections. There currently is no cure, but infected cats can live fairly normal lives for years.
FIV and other cats: FIV is transmitted through deep bite wounds. Casual contact such as sharing food/water bowls, sharing litterboxes, mutual grooming, or cuddling with other cats is extremely unlikely to spread FIV. However, we recommend that FIV+ cats be the only cats in their home or live with other FIV+ cats.
Indoor life: It’s important that FIV+ cats be kept indoors to avoid further spread of the disease and limit their own exposure to other diseases from contact with other animals.
Resources: We are happy to provide more information about FIV during your visit, but if you have questions, we’d also recommend consulting your regular veterinarian before adoption.
