HOW TO ADOPT: This cat is participating in our Shelter Cat Getaway foster program, which gives cats a vacation from the shelter and lets them enjoy home life while they wait to be adopted. To schedule a time to meet this cat, please contact Mary at mmccarroll@arl-iowa.org — Kristoff and Shetland are Bonded Buddies. They will be adopted as a pair. – This cat came from a situation where he did not get the socialization and handling that cats typically get from a young age. Because of this, he will be fearful in new environments and around new people, and will need weeks and likely months of acclimation time to feel safe in a home. – He may never enjoy being picked up or held – he will be a “companion” cat for someone who wants a cat to love and care for and is okay not having an affectionate lap cat – Looking for a patient family who will give him extra time to adjust and understand that he will hide at first; that he will need patience when introducing grooming, carriers and veterinary visits; and that a relationship with him will likely be built on trust and routine, rather than physical affection – Has lived with other cats his entire life and may benefit from having a calm, confident feline companion to help him feel more secure and show him the ropes in a home environment – Will do best in a quiet, mature, predictable home with a cat-savvy adopter who understands undersocialized or fearful cats; while progress may be slow, it will be so rewarding to watch this cat open up, build trust with her people and ultimately thrive – Children are not a good fit for this cat, and she will thrive in a very calm, predictable, quiet environment – Please plan on starting him in one room of your home and giving him quite a bit of time (possibly months) to become comfortable with that area and with you before allowing him access to larger areas of the home; this process will help set him up for success by not overwhelming him All adoptable cats and kittens are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and FVRCP as appropriate for their age) |
