23 dogs brought to safety

When our Animal Welfare & Response Team responded to a call from law enforcement about a large group of dogs living outdoors without proper care in southwest Iowa, they arrived to find 23 dirty, flea- and tick-infested dogs and puppies, roaming their owner’s property and the surrounding area.

Over the 8-hour mission, our team spread out over a wide area rescuing the scared dogs, even descending into a nearby ravine to bring one up to safety. But the most shocking discovery was a dog named Kimber, who held up one leg encased in an old, dirty cast. Even from afar the smell of infection was overpowering. We were told the cast had been on her leg for months with no vet care. We couldn’t imagine the pain she was in.

Back at the shelter, we rushed Kimber to our Miracle Medical Ward, where our surgical team gave her pain medications and cut away the cast, revealing an unhealed break, festering wounds and nails so overgrown they had punctured her foot. Despite her condition, Kimber lay calmly as our team worked, relieved to finally be receiving the help she needed.

We don’t know yet if Kimber will be able to keep her leg or what surgery she might require, but we do know she will be with us for weeks. Your gift today will not only help her heal, it will give hope to these dogs and so many others.
